Platonic - Title Design Concept (Sarofsky Labs)

Two weeks ago I was able to attend the title design labs at Sarofsky in Chicago. What an amazing experience - the goal of the workshop was to get hands on experience designing titles for an already existing show. While we had many options to choose from (Goosebumps, Citadel, etc.) I decided to work on a title for something that I would not normally pick - Platonic (which is currently on Apple+) - I’ve watched it it’s super funny!

The show is about two former friends who reunite after many years have gone by (and after making different life choices) to engage in hilarity disaster and hijinks.

As a part of the workshop we were given a creative brief to describe the project and to also describe themes to pay attention to when coming up with ideas for the show. The main theme is about the differences in gender and the different typical life paths that people take while growing into adults (men vs. women).

The show is not about romance but rather about the dynamic between the two characters as they lean into the ensuing chaos of their friendship.
For the concept I decided to go with the idea of a scrapbook, magazine cutout theme. I know I cut out a lot of pictures from magazines during art class and for school projects (this was pre-internet of course).

At the workshop the frames were initially clean and. I thought there was too much empty space so I decided to add stickers for the corresponding side (stickers for boys and for girls)
The  stickers (both for boys and girls) that represent youth and childhood innocence.
The photos represent the idea of the process of growing from childhood to adulthood. The show is a comedy and so the theme of the phots are fun and frolicking with a party vibe (YOLO!)
As the sequence progresses you can see that the stickers start to vanish which also represents the growth into adult and dealing with adult choices (marriage, divorce and moving forward in life).
As we get to the final frame I added back in one sticker which is suggestive of the two main characters friendship and a nod to their childish antics.
Again special thanks to the team at Sarofsky for holding the workshop - it was such a great time and I learned a ton!!!!
